Golden Gate Casino & Hotel
Wouldn’t it be nice to stay in a cozy hotel that offers all the amenities of a larger place, is located downtown on Fremont Street, and consistently is named Best of Las Vegas year after year after year? A hotel with a genuine history behind it, in fact, the oldest hotel in Las Vegas.
That’s what the Golden Gate Casino and Hotel offers its guests. Just the best of everything in a warm, inviting atmosphere that included in room coffee, complimentary newspaper, cable television and voice mail, and computer ports.
Historical notes:
1906: hotel opens; room and board could be had for just one dollar a day
1907: first telephone in Las Vegas installed in the Golden Gate Hotel
1909: Gambling outlawed in Nevada not to be legalized again until 1931
1959: Golden Gate introduces the shrimp cocktail to Las Vegas; dining changing the palate of diners in Las Vegas forever
1991: The Golden Gate marks the sale of the 25th million shrimp cocktail sold
1995: Fremont Street puts up two million lights; the Golden Gate expands to one hundred and six rooms
Expect the unexpected when your stay is at Golden Gate Hotel. The lovely sounds of the baby grand piano in the hotel can give way to high wired action of free light shows on Fremont Street. Who or whatever you run across on Fremont Street is part of the unique flavor and charm of downtown Las Vegas. Maybe you’ll spot some showgirls strolling arm in arm taking in the light shows after work. Or be amazed by a fire eater. Or actually run across a mime working the crowd into a frenzy. It all adds up to the unique experience that is Las Vegas in general and the Golden Gate Casino/Hotel in particular.
The best shrimp cocktail in town – where to find it? At the San Francisco Shrimp Bar and Deli, the place that introduced Las Vegas to the wonder that is shrimp cocktail back in 1959. Since that time, over twenty five million of the little guys have been consumed by happy faces at the San Francisco Shrimp Bar and Deli. Shrimp are served in old-fashioned tulip glasses generally reserved for sundaes. No room for ice cream in these glasses however, they are just too stuffed with shrimp.
The Bay City Diner is also a valued Las Vegas institution. It’s common wisdom to find out where local eat and go there for the best food in town. The Bay City Diner feeds a good portion of the local population, who go there for traditional entrees at wonderful prices. A not so well kept secret in downtown Las Vegas.
The Golden Gate Casino offers table games, Blackjack, Craps, Let it Ride, Caribbean Stud Poker and Roulette. The bet minimums are five dollars and up at the Blackjack tables, Let it Ride, Craps, and most other games. The atmosphere here is more laid back than one would find in a casino on The Strip. Slot machines and video poker is also available on a limited basis due to size restrictions at this casino.
Travelers seeking a bit of the “real” Las Vegas should check into the Golden Gate Hotel and spend time in the Golden Gate Casino – the quaint, friendly atmosphere and midnight entertainment on the baby grand in the middle of the casino will transport you back to a slower, gentler time where time moved slower and shrimp cocktail was the biggest rage in town.
